Dr. Jenike,
I’ve read a number of case reports and small studies that latent toxoplasmosis can affect basal ganliae and amygdala, and was linked not only to schizophrenia but OCD and mood disorder.
Do you have any experience with that?
My son’s IgG is high. What would be the next step?
Thank you!
hello
this is a good question as T. gondi has been loosely implicated in neurologic and mental illnesses. high IgG in T. gondi in OCD has been reported so i would check with an infectious disease specialist to rune this out. there are more and more data about the role of infectious illnesses in OCD and other mental health disorders. go a Google search for PANS and PANDAS for more information. also, the IOCF web site has a lot of information: www.ocfoundation.org.
all best wishes,
Michael Jenike, MD
Hi Dr. Jenike, I am in a similar situation…is there a specific type of infectious disease specialist to look for (when dealing with t. gondii AND ocd)? What is a good resource to locate the most appropriate type of specialist? Thank you very much in advance!
I would think than any infectious disease specialist could rule out T. Gondi. most large hospitals have Infectious Disease specialists. best wishes,
Michael Jenike, MD
