Our 22 year old has BDD. He has suffered from this disorder since age 12. In the past he has had some difficult times but with medication and therapy he has seen his symptoms improve. He recently graduated from college…a great achievement but his BDD came back full blown about 9 months ago. He is home, very depressed, not working or seeing friends. He is being treated by a psychiatrist for his depression. He feels that nothing will help him. Has anyone had experience with someone getting help, staying better and able to be productive with this brain illness?
depression is very common with BDD. it sounds like your son needs specialized treatments with an OCD/BDD expert. you can locate experts by going to http://www.ocfoundation.org and putting you location in the treatment providers section. if you are near Mass General Hospital, Dr. Sabine Wilhelm has a BDD clinic there and also Kathy Phillips, MD has one at Brown University in Providence, RI. Both have written very good books on BDD. all best wishes,
Michael Jenike, MD
