MemberHi, Can you give me information on severe adult BDD impatient treatment centers? The hopeful patient lives in the Philadelphia area, but I think we could try to get her on a plane if there is nothing close by. However, I am afraid that time is getting short. The one thing that I knew would finish her off just happened–she's losing her hair. She said that every time she sees that monster in the mirror, the only thing that didn't totally disgust her about it was the hair. According to the one doctor it is from stress. Another doctor eluded to the fact that it could be Androgenetic Alopecia, which she had been fixated on for over a week now. However, I can count the times she left her house in 5 years on one hand. She is 100% suicidal and a severe, severe case.

KeymasterThe only in-patient treatment centers that treat BDD is the OCD Institute at McLean Hospital (Belmont, MA). For program or admission information, please contact: Leslie Keebler, LiCSW, Admissions Clinician at 617-855-3371 lkeebler@partners.org.
For outpatient therapists in your area please contact:
Dr. Edna Foa, Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety at the University of Pennsylvania.
You can also search treatment providers here. In the search fields for treatment strategies select CBT and for specialty area select BDD.
Additional resources:
“Feeling Good about the Way You Look: A Program for Overcoming Body Image Problems” by Sabine Wilhelm (The Guilford Press, 2006) is recommended to help individuals understand their body image concerns and decide whether they should be evaluated for BDD. It offers a CBT-based self-help approach with step-by-step guidelines for overcoming appearance-related thoughts and behaviors.
“The Broken Mirror: Understanding and Treating Body Dysmorphic Disorder” by Katharine Phillips (Oxford University Press, 2005).
