Memberour son started having chronic tics at age 5. he is now 10 and he still has them and they are worse when he is watching TV or on the computer. They are chronic as they have been present longer than a year ( 5 years). It is a swelling, gulping sound with a jerk of the head and sometimes blinking added in. He will make this gulping sound 5 times n a minute so its almost constant. Will he grow out of it? He has had it for a while. Is there any way to treat it, make it better? Should we be doing something to determine exactly what the cause is and how to treat it? please help.

MemberHello
i would have your sons seen by an expert in Tourettes. you can Google the society that specializes in this and likely get names of good people near you. there are medications that may help if this is disabling in any way. if you cannot find an expert, let me know and i will try to track someone down. all best wishes,

MemberI have tried to find a doctor specializing in this here and had not much luck. I even asked our pediatrician for a reference but he sent me to a neurosurgeon. What society should I look at?
Do you think he will grow out of it, or does it sound more serious such that it may be tourettes and if it is, will it get worse?

The society is the Tourette Syndrome Association and their website is: TSA-USA.org. There is a wealth of information for families, much like the IOCDF for those with OCD. Good luck!

Memberthese kinds of symptoms usually improve with age but medications can help a lot. if you go to the TSA web site, can you find an expert not too far away. it would be worth traveling to get a good workup and treatment recommendations. take care,
