Dear Dr. Jenike,
I have been exposed to asbestos on construction sites in the past and then recently discovered that I have vermiculite (which may contain asbestos) in the attic( which is completely filled with many personal items) of my home. The type of asbestos we could have is called Tremolite , which is one of the very worst kinds. I have read up about it on the internet and have become very concerned. I have also contacted many experts in the field and have received a lot of conflicting answers. There are many opinions on how to determine if you have an asbestos problem in your home and what to do about it. I have OCD tendencies and am having a hard time trying to resolve the situation. I am worried about the presence of it and have created some protection rituals. I think if I could determine if it is present that we may have spread it throughout the home. It is microscopic, so you cannot see it and is very hard to test a home for. I was wondering if you have ever run into this circumstance in the past and can give me any advice. I can give you a lot more information but I wanted to keep this concise to start off with.
Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. You are welcome to email or phone me.
if there really is asbestos in your house, you need an expert to evaluate safety. probably your state health department can recommend someone good. if there is no evidence there is asbestos and you have OCD, i suggested getting a CBT person involved in your treatment. all best wishes,
Michael Jenike, MD
